JDA designed this modern new build house in Radlet

JDA designed this modern new build house in Radlett as a replacement for the bungalow that previously stood on the site. The house is laid out over three floors with the natural sloping topography of the site being used to allow the basement swimming pool to open onto the lower garden area.

Our design incorporates plenty of glass and balconies to the principal bedrooms, to make the most of views to the open countryside as well as the wonderful landscape design by @cool_gardens , it also includes feature brickwork by @petersentegl

A dramatic slate clad wall cuts through the double height entrance hallway which itself includes a cantilevered staircase and walk on glass over the basement below. The hallway takes full advantage of the beautiful setting with views straight through from front to rear.

Jane Duncan Architects were tasked with designing

Jane Duncan Architects were tasked with designing a replacement pavilion for Chorleywood Cricket Club to replace the rather tired old 1960’s pavilion on the site. The club had teamed up with the charity, Mission EmployAble, who would operate a café from the new building too.
The site proved to be tricky regarding planning as it is located on Chorleywood Common (where even the grass is afforded protection), in the Green Belt, in the Chorleywood Conservation Area, opposite a Grade II Listed Church, and opposite Chorleywood Parish Council’s offices.

Internally, the building is designed so the cricket club facilities, including the lounge, first floor changing rooms and viewing terrace, face towards the playing area, while the café faces towards one of the footpaths across Chorleywood Common. The club lounge and the café are separated by a removable partition so the spaces can operate individually or combine for larger group gatherings. Externally, Black timber cladding and a slate roof have been used to ensure the new building sits quietly in its rather prominent position on the Common and in the context of the Listed Church.

Following on from last week’s post we thought we would revisit this lovely project in Latimer. The house was originally built in 1975 as is located within the AONB and nearby to several listed properties. JDA and JDI were briefed to create a modern open plan family home. A 2-storey extension was added with a visible break between new and old, delineated by an aluminium link which also forms the new back door to the house. Care was taken to make sure the bricks and even the existing ‘pink’ mortar were matched. The client’s choice of brown metallic replacement windows was a further response to the 1970’s architecture. The final design makes use of the natural light and wonderful views through the large glazing into the landscaped garden. It was also shortlisted for the Chilterns Buildings Design Awards!

8 years after redesigning this client's main home,

8 years after redesigning this client's main home, JDA and JDI were pleased to collaborate once more. This time we designed a modern pavilion at the end of the garden to include an entertainment space next to the new spa pool as well as occasional guest accommodation. The outbuilding features a large, open plan kitchenette, large corner sliding doors, changing room and a steam shower.
The design takes its cues from both the previous extension of the main house and garage building with materials such as the black timber cladding and a flat green roof. The building sits quietly within its surroundings in the green belt, and most importantly does not influence the 3m high listed garden wall directly behind.

JDA were appointed alongside JDI to assist with the refurbishment and modernisation of this stunning Grade II listed Mill House. The property is believed to have been built in 1640 and is highly significant as it is thought to have been built on the site of one of the three water mills at Amersham as mentioned in the Doomsday Book.

As part of the modernisation, JDA designed a new ‘glass box’ extension to allow more light into the new kitchen and provide a better connection with the wonderful garden, something our client has created and maintained. The new extension has been designed to complement the existing house and ensure its original character and heritage is maintained while the floating flat roof defines new living spaces inside and out. A glass link detail provides a visual separation between new and old and handmade bricks marry the new wall of the link with the old house.

We are delighted to share that we recently obtained planning permission to replace a rather run-down collection of buildings in Muswell Hill with two 4-bed terraced houses and three flats, one being a maisonette. The site is located in a quiet residential street close to the amenities of Muswell Hill and benefits from stunning views across London.

JDA proposed to reduce the current made-up ground, to its natural level, creating an additional, lower ground floor for the proposed buildings and reducing the large retaining walls facing the neighbouring gardens. Working closely with the planning consultant (Duncan Gibson Consultancy) and design officers at Haringey Council, we developed a design which is contemporary, but at the same time references the local vernacular by way of its scale, the use of traditional materials and detailing.

The CIOB Team Award celebrates the collaboration and combined efforts of groups of people working together to meet a combined goal and JDA and JDI are proud to have been part of the successful team.
